Philosophy >  Higher Education

Higher education is a high calling.

It is a great undertaking because of the deep level of responsibility that it requires.

  • Students receive an education that influences them to live in communities where they serve others in return, pursue excellence in their daily work, and are known intimately. Because learning is a life-long process, there is much potential to shape the lives of students through regular interactions.
  • Assessment through reflection is a way of evaluating the learning process and of allowing learning to become deeply ingrained.

Education and innovation are synonymous.

The work of educating students is a process that is always in progress. Higher educators are known as innovators in thinking and action. To reach a new era in scholarship, education is delivered using tools that are best suited for the students' needs and for the desired outcomes.

  • Course formats vary and change as appropriate and needed. Course content is relevant to learners.
  • Technology is one of many methods that is used to engage students in the learning process.
  • Classes encourage collaboration and provide a supportive environment.

The faculty and administrators fulfill their roles as their act of service.

Their guiding question is, "In what ways can we serve our students well through their education?" They take seriously their opportunity to influence young and mature minds. They ensure that students learn no matter what their backgrounds or identities are, helping them start well and finish well.

  • The faculty serve through teaching. They perform scholarly research that connect them with their students, revealing that they are not only the knowledge keepers but are learning guides and mentors. Their curricular innovations are consistently evident.
  • The administrators are good stewards of resources. And, they provide learning and leadership opportunities that contribute to the students' development as whole persons.

The students achieve a global and dynamic sense of existence.

With their education, students become servants in turn, transformed through the process of learning in community. They leave with their character changed.
